Meet our 2021 TOU interns! We are very pleased to welcome interns from around the world virtually this summer! During our first week, the TOU interns have been engaged in exploring the work of the Temple of Understanding and learning more about the United Nations as they begin to think about the topics they will be researching throughout the program. We are looking forward to participating in HLPF, hearing from speakers on numerous topics, experiencing religious site visits, and more over the next few weeks!

Maja Shapiro, Sweden & England

My name is Maja Shapiro, and I am 22 years old. Being lucky to have grown up between Stockholm and London, my interest in international politics can be traced back many years. I have observed how every society is distinct yet interdependent, and have been fostered with a belief in exploring the world as the key to understanding as well as having an impact on the efforts in enacting sustainable change. At the moment, I am finishing my Bachelor’s Degree in Development Studies, and I am eager to challenge myself so as to begin the pursuit of working with human rights. For this internship, I am ambitious to understand the interplay between the human right to education, social justice, and gender inequity, and I aspire to explore the structural issues that are challenging the equal development that is overdue. I look forward to interacting and learning with others in an international setting.
