The research topics chosen by the students are of contemporary importance each year and are on the summer agenda for the United Nations. The issues addressed by our twenty 2013 interns fell into three categories: Human Rights Violations; the Millennium Development Goals 3, 7 and 8; and Civil Unrest.  The Millennium Development Goals that students used as a guideline for their topics were:

Eradication of Extreme Poverty and Hunger
Achieve Universal Primary Education
Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women
Reduce Child Mortality
Improve Maternal Health
Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria, and Other Disease
Ensure Environmental Sustainability
Develop a Global Partnership for Development
